WALES Cardiff is an interesting and small city compared to it's counterparts in England. It has only been the Capital of Wales since1955. It's a clean city with friendly people and for a city it's size, it's a busy place. You might want to begin your visit with a stop at the Cardiff Bay Visitor Center. On our short daytrip we stopped by the gift store of Cardiff's famous brewery--Brains! They've got some really neat shirts and beer related items for sale. We also visited the interesting Cardiff Castle. They've got a beautiful shopping area in the city centre. Web site is here. As I mentioned, we only spent a few hours in this neat place after taking the train from London. All we really had time to do was to stroll up and down the streets of Cardiff and take in a few sights. Someday we'll return and visit much more of Wales. Many people in Wales still communicate in Welsh and most town names are printed in Welsh as your train passes through small communities. Large areas of Cardiff have undergone much redevelopment in recent years and you really notice this in the docklands area of the city. Cardiff offers the same opportunities that many other cities in the U.K. to tourists including museums, city parks, and small and large shops. As for restaurants I can't help you much. We were starved when we arrived at the train station and the lure of a Pizza Hut buffet was just too much temptation! We left Cardiff with this simple impression. It seemed like a nice place with very friendly people. While we have been to a lot of places, our M-O is to blitz-sample all we can take in and then decide where we want to spend more time in the future. Our blitz-sample of Wales was positive and wed like to go back, especially to see the seacoast. Sorry we cant be more helpful on Wales. Currency is the British Pound Sterling. Driving is on the left. Passport needed if you arrive by plane. There are no document checks if youre just heading there from England, etc. |
