RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
This is a wonderful little restaurant in the old section of this fairy tale city.
On our first visit to Salzburg we were really beat as we checked into the incredible SAS Radisson Altstadt Hotel. After getting our key we asked if there was a good restaurant nearby and we were told that a fine restaurant was located just steps from the backdoor of the hotel. After freshening up off we went to Zum Mohren and it was just a few feet off to the right.
You step down into this restaurant and it has a "cave" like feeling. There are several different chambers on slightly different levels. We immediately noticed that most other diners were kind of dressed up but even though I didn't have a sport coat or tie and my wife had casual slacks, the staff couldn't have been any nicer.
History buffs will enjoy the fact that this restaurants sits in the cellar of a building that was built way back in the 15th century. Eaters will enjoy the hearty Bavarian food.
You'll find plenty of local Salzburgers in this popular place along with tourists. Most are drinking beer with their meals.
We've had the pleasure of dining at Zum Mohren several times and have sampled everything from fresh fish dishes (excellent) to pork, beef and various specials. And while I'm not a dessert person, my wife always orders something sinfully rich there. My daughter loves the strudel.
While prices aren't cheap, this is one of the more affordable nice restaurants around and we highly recommend it.
Reservations are suggested as this place gets packed. The number to call is 0662-842387. They are located at Judeng 9/Rudolfskai 20. Update: They now have their very own web site. Check it out right here although the English portion was not functioning the last time we checked it. Sprechen sie Deutcsh anybody?
