RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
If you're cruising around the pretty island of Gozo in Malta and find yourself hungry in Xlendi Bay, you might want to give the Village Inn a try.
Gozo is one of three islands that makes up Malta. It's much smaller and the pace less hurried than the main island and it's only a short 20 minute ferry ride away. The Maltese love to go there for weekends and holidays.
We hired a driver for a day long trip of Gozo during our trip and he recommended the Village Inn for lunch.
It's a small restaurant with just a few crowded tables and it's in a very pretty little village right on the edge of the sea. As you can see from the picture, they offer outside seating but on this day it was probably 95 degrees so we chose to dine inside. It was funny, too, because the moment we walked in they fired up the air conditioning. We must have looked hot! And we were!
The bread they brought to start the meal off was just great. In fact I could have made a meal of it.
For my main meal I chose a seafood pasta dish with lots of shrimp, squid, octopus, and mussels in a light tomato and wine sauce. It was pretty good although one of the mussels tasted as if it had gone south. But hey, that happens anywhere.
My wife chose a good old American style burger and fries. But as I've said before in many other reviews, burgers in Europe other than at mainline fast food places usually never turn out anything like us Yanks are expecting. And this was the case at the Village Inn although it was good.
On a scale of one to ten, we'd rate this place a six. It's right in the middle of this small sleepy little village. As they say, you can't miss it!
