My first encounter with this place came in 1984.  I had gone to work for radio station Z-93 and we had a major rock 'n roll group at the station.  When it came time to take them to lunch, they insisted on The Varsity.

What is The Varsity?  It's the world's biggest drive-in restaurant!  And it's a long standing tradition for folks down in the Great Grit.

The place serves an unbelievable amount of excessively greasy burgers, fries, and onion rings each day along with miles of hot dogs and oceans of soda pop.

The doors of The Varsity opened for the first time in 1928 and it's had a steady following since that time.  Above and beyond Joe Six Pack patrons, The Varsity has stretched belt loops on a number of famous eaters.  Among the names you'd recognize are former Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush and Jimmy Carter, Vice President Dan "I can't spell" Quayle, and one king---Elvis Presley.

When Elvis was in town he would send limo after limo to The Varsity running up incredibly large bills for the time.

If you don't feel like curb service there's always plenty of room inside.  But a word of caution.  Know what you're going to order before you get to the order station.  They move at lightening speed and if you're not quick with your order, you may be reprimanded to the back of the line!  So when they yell out "What'll you have?!" be prepared to shout out your order!

They even have special lingo for various items.  For instance a "heavy weight" is a chili dog with extra chili.  Check out their web site for more fun information on this fascinating place.

They now have four locations around Atlanta but if you're a Varsity virgin, you must hit the original location first.  It's a right of passage!

Directions are included in their web site here.
