A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

TUMUNU RESTAURANT
RAROTONGA, COOK ISLANDS

This is an attractive place with a South Pacific island theme inside with a lot of interesting little knickknacks on the walls.

Upon examining the menu here my antenna immediately went up.  At last a restaurant in the South Pacific that had a pretty extensive list of fish and shellfish.  My dream had come true, I thought.  For some reason you don't find a very wide variety of fresh fish in the South Pacific.  At least we've found this to be true in Polynesia, French Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia.

As I studied the menu our super waitress brought the bottle of wine we had ordered and with great expectation I asked her to suggest the very freshest fish on the menu.  With a beautiful and warm smile she told me:  "Oh sir all of our fish is frozen but it is very good."  Alas - the South Pacific fresh fish curse!

My excitement faded and I went about ordering.  I chose a seafood platter (fried) and it was quite tasty.  At least they have perfected the proper way to store frozen fish and revive it.

The rest of our diners got seafood selections and my son-in-law actually raved about his fried shrimp.

The guys at the table sipped a cognac and a cup of coffee while the ladies each finished with a simple but tasty dessert.

This was a very pleasant experience and I'd highly recommend it to you.

To the best of my knowledge, the restaurant does not have a web site.  They're located in Arorangi and their phone number is 682 20 501.
