RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
During a visit to the Bay Area we were staying near the St. Petersburg - Clearwater International Airport and were in the mood for some good Mexican. Our hotel concierge recommended a little place and we decided to check out. It was a little hole in the wall in a strip mall and not very appealing. Ironically some of the very best Mexican restaurants we've ever sampled appeared in just such locations. But we both agreed that we'd pass on that one and look elsewhere.
On the way to the Mexican joint we passed a brightly illuminated place called Tucson's Southwest Grill. I'm not a huge fan of Southwest cooking, in general, but we were hungry and stopped in. It was a good move!
The menu featured all kinds of beef, chicken and pork with various Southwestern rubs and a tempting Mexican section. Since we had set out looking for Mexican, we decided we'd pick something Mexican.
We started with some taquitos for an appetizer and they were tasty but nothing sensational.
For our mains, I got a Mexican combo that came with two cheese enchiladas, a chicken burrito, hard shell beef taco and beans and rice. My wife chose a two enchilada dinner. We weren't expecting much but what arrived was amazing!
My enchiladas were some of the best I've had in recent memory. Some of the best ever. And that's saying something since we have lived in Dallas and San Antonio where Mexican food is a staple. My taco was so perfectly seasoned that it didn't even require additional salsa. My wife's chicken enchiladas were great, too.
My Mexican combo, which would probably cost at least $15 at comparable restaurants was only $9.95! My wife's enchilada platter was only $7.95. Great food. Great value.
If you're ever near the airport in St. Pete and want some really good down home Mexican, this is your place. By the way, we saw order after order of sizzling fajitas going to other tables and they looked mighty good. We may try 'em next time we're there.
We highly recommend this place based on our first visit. For directions, a glimpse of the menu and so forth, go to their web site here.
