RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

THANYING RESTAURANT
BANGKOK, THAILAND

This lovely restaurant came highly recommended by our driver from the Shangri-La hotel.  It's right in downtown Bangkok yet off the beaten path.  This is not the kind of place you'll just stumble upon.  You have to know about this place.

The car drives up a small driveway into almost a garden setting.  Once inside the restaurant you find yourself looking outside the windows at a lovely tropical setting.  It's a world away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok which completely surrounds this little oasis.

The place is neat and nicely air conditioned.  The waiters are well dressed.  The service is quick but not obtrusive.

My wife and I each agonized over the lengthy menu and finally we each decided on a set meal.  As I recall, they both were between $12 and $14 U.S., great for a classy place like this.

Both of our dinners started out with a Thai appetizer sampler. Included was fried crab, a spring roll, stuffed prawn, satays, and other goodies.  The fried crab was really different.  It consisted of thin  strips of crab fried lightly almost tempura style.

Some of the Starters

Our main meal each consisted of a Thai sampler that included beef, chicken, and shrimp dishes plus two soups, one a tangy curry concoction. Each dish was quite good although I should have asked our server to make it a little more spicy.  I'm sure chefs automatically tone it way down for sissy American palates but it could have actually used a little more heat for me.  Speak with your server about your tastes if you eat here.

Some of the Main Courses
TOP LEFT:  FRIED CRAB STRANDS
TOP RIGHT:  BEEF & MUSHROOM STEW
BOTTOM LEFT:  VEGETABLE SAMPLER
BOTTOM RIGHT:  WHOLE GIANT FRIED PRAWN

We can highly recommend this restaurant to you!  And it has gotten good reviews in some of the biggest newspapers in America.

Curry Soup But Not As Fiery As It Looks!

Thanying Restaurant is located at 10 Thanon Pramuan between Silom 17 and 19 in the Silom section of Bangkok.  Their phone number is (66) 02-236-4361.  We were there early but I'd highly suggest a reservation if you're gonna be dining prime time from 7pm to 9pm.  The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from 11:30am until 10:30pm.  They now have a web site here.
