RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK SKIPPERS
BISTRO When we hit our hotel concierge up for a recommendation for a good seafood restaurant he didn't even pause. He immediately blurted out Skippers Bistro. And it was a very good recommendation! It's a short cab ride away from the downtown Edinburgh area and is a pretty small place. While it's casual the seafood is sensational and the menu is heavy on fish rather than crustaceans although you'll find several of those critters on the appetizer list. Or on the "starters" page as they call appetizers in the U.K.
We found the fresh oysters on the half shell particularly rewarding although my wife raved about her cup of fish soup to start out her meal. For our main course, I went with the impeccably fresh whole plaice. Plaice is a flounder like fish. You pick the meat off of one side, then flip it over and devour the rest. It came in a lemony butter sauce. Outstanding! My wife had the fresh salmon filet which she said was the best salmon she'd ever had. Our daughter selected the lemon sole and her husband chose halibut. We all agreed that it was a sensational meal and the wait staff was just terrific. You'll find all the info you need on Skippers Bistro on their web site here. If your food is half as good as ours was, you're gonna love this place! I'd highly suggest a reservation because there aren't a lot of tables and you wouldn't want to wind up being turned away! OTHER RESTAURANT REVIEWS FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM: Anchorage
