RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK SIMPLY
HEATHCOTE'S This is a very popular restaurant in Liverpool and has several cousin branches elsewhere in the U.K. This particular branch was located a very short walk down the street from the hotel we based at during this trip -- the Thistle Liverpool. The restaurant is extremely modern looking and sits in a neat glass enclosed area of a building. Now -- getting down to the grub! I started out with a terrine of smoked trout & potato and it was rewarding. It had a lovely horseradish sauce that gave it a good kick. My wife tried a fish soup and while it was okay, there certainly wasn't much fish in it. It was more a thick creamy base with tiny specks of seafood in it. It could have been a lot better. She selected salmon as her main course. It came with risotto and peas. I'm a sucker for fish and chips and when you're in a country that serves it up better than any nation on Earth, why not go for it? It came with the usual "mushy" peas and our waitress seemed surprised that I enjoyed them. She said most Americans turn their nose up at them. But in Britain, no fish and chips meal would be complete without them! Portions of the fish were ample but certainly far from generous as you would likely find at a British pub. I enjoyed a cup of coffee and my wife ended her meal with a selection of several different ice creams. Overall the meal was good. Not outstanding but certainly not bad, either. You can get complete details about this restaurant at their web site. OTHER RESTAURANT REVIEWS FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM:
