RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
THE SEA SHELL
During one of our trips to England we were told that we simply must try the Sea Shell for fish and chips so off we went.
I don't know what we expected to find but upon arrival the place looked a bit run down. Once inside it was pleasant but much smaller than we had expected and a bit on the drab side. I'm told that since our visit the place has undergone a makeover inside.
There were plenty of celebrity pictures on the walls of people who had eaten there. One, as I recall, was of Stevie Wonder of Motown fame.
The Sea Shell is billed as serving up the finest fish and chips in London and it certainly was good but not the best we've ever had in London. Once we stopped at a random pub along the Thymes and had an amazingly wonderful fish and chips luncheon that blew our socks off. I wish I could remember the name of that place.
The menu lists the traditional fish and chips fare including cod, plaice and some other sea critters like prawns, Dover sole, and salmon. I sampled the traditional plaice and my wife went with the cod. Both were fried up to a golden brown and the chips were lovely, too. Also, we had to indulge in an order of famous British "mushy peas." They're just green peas all mashed up but they taste great. Portions were a bit on the small side but not bad. Prices were pretty reasonable.
Locals tell me that they fancy the Sea Shell better for take-away dining rather than a sit down meal. Either way, it's certainly worth a try.
The Sea Shell is located at 49-51 Lisson Grove, London NW1.
