DIAMOND HEAD RESTAURANT
We had seen Sam on TV many times and he's a very likeable guy. So we decided to try his flagship restaurant in Honolulu. It's just a short cab ride away from Waikiki hotels.
Sam is billed as the "King of pokes" (pronounced pokies) in Hawaii so we elected to start out with his big pupu sampler for two, which included poke. Poke in Hawaii usually consists primarily of raw, marinated fish.
Our appetizer was called the Hukilau Pupu Platter and consisted of fried poke, a crab Rangoon type fried wonton, seared tuna, and shrimp Christopher. These are shrimp that have been stuffed with crab and wrapped in bacon.
For my main course, our waiter talked me into a nightly special called Moi, something not commonly found on Hawaiian menus. That's a freshwater fish that used to be reserved for Hawaiian royalty only in years gone by. It was pan roasted whole and served on a bed of asparagus and topped with a light but tasty sauce. I had an order of garlic mashed potatoes on the side and they were to die for. The fish was quite good. It was about the size of a freshwater rainbow trout. While it didn't bother me, there were several scales that somebody failed to catch. And they were big, about half the size of a dime.
My wife chose macadamia encrusted chicken breast for her main course. And while golden brown on the outside, it was significantly overcooked and rubbery in the center.
While we enjoyed our meal here it wasn't a perfect "10."
One side note. While this is admittedly an upscale eatery, it is not at all stuffy and seems to be a very family friendly place.
