RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
Upon checking into the Shangri-La Hotel, we asked the concierge for dinner advice explaining that we wanted to sample genuine Malaysian food. He suggested a place called Saloma and explained that it was just a short walk down the street.
Turns out this was a buffet restaurant with an optional floor show thrown in. My antenna went up immediately fearing that we had selected a tourist spot that was big on entertainment but not on food. We opted for the buffet without the show and I have to say the food was quite good.
The restaurant featured numerous noodle and rice dishes along with the traditional Malaysian satays, barbecued ribs, chicken, fish, shrimp, soups and many other items.
We were offered inside seating or outdoor seating and chose to eat outside because it was a beautiful evening. Not too terribly hot and sticky unlike the daytime hours in K.L.
I'm a little bit confused about Saloma over whether they always offer a buffet and show or not. But if you dig deeply enough into their web site you may find a buffet listed under "Events and Promo." Given the quality of the food at the buffet, I would assume that when they are in a "regular" restaurant mode it would be as good if not better. Their menu items look pretty interesting on the web site.
Good vittles! Give it a try next time you're in K.L.
