PASCAL'S MANALE

A lot of people mispronounce the name of this fine dining establishment.  You'll often hear it described as Pascal Manale's.  But it's Pascal's Manale and it's a New Orleans fixture.

This is the place to go for famous New Orleans barbecued shrimp.  But it's not what you might think.  In this case barbecue means a peppery, buttery sauce.  Your "head on" shrimp are simmered in this rich broth and then you peel and eat them.  But you're not done yet.  You simply must take your leftover French bread and dip it in the remaining sauce.  It would be a crime to leave any of it behind.

I've tried to recreate this dish at home and while I've come up with acceptable placebos, I haven't actually come close to the real deal.  For one thing I'll never be able to obtain the quality of shrimp they use at the restaurant.  And I usually get mine too spicy or not spicy enough.  At Pascal's they're pretty spicy.  They've got some very tempting appetizers and main dishes other than barbecued shrimp.  But on your first visit you really should try what put this place on the map a long, long time ago.

They've got a nice selection of desserts and scalding hot coffee to top off your tank.

Pascal's Manale is located in Uptown New Orleans on Napoleon Avenue.  In a city of dining greats, this is truly a great experience and especially if you like shrimp.
