RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

THE PALM RESTAURANT
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

This branch is part of the famous chain of upscale steakhouses.  It is located in the fabulous Wyndham El San Juan Hotel and casino.  The resort is located in the upscale Isla Verde district on San Juan right on the ocean.

The decor is decidedly on the posh side but the servers are very friendly and knowledgeable about the products they place before diners.  And while patrons are encouraged to dress nicely the place does not have the "stuffy" feeling that some other high ticket restaurants have.

My wife started her meal with a cup of lobster bisque and it was terrific!  I know because I slurped a spoonful, too!  For my appetizer I selected Clams Casino and they were great, too.  Sometimes places serve them with underdone bacon.  But here, they were perfect.

For the main deal I caved in and ordered the 28 ounce Porterhouse steak.  My wife opted for the small filet mignon.  Both were very good although my steak was slightly overcooked.  I ordered it "very rare" and it came out medium rare.  I suppose I should have sent it back considering the price we paid but I hate to be fussy.  And besides, our server couldn't have been any nicer and I didn't want to ruin her evening.  My wife's was cooked perfectly.  We shared an order of broccoli (huge portion) and some mashed potatoes between us.  Those 'taters were extremely rich and well done.

My wife decided to sample a piece of cheesecake.  I just nursed a cognac and a good, hot cup of black coffee to finish off the meal.

The tab with a bottle of wine came to about $120, as I recall.  But it was an excellent dining experience.

The Palm's web site in San Juan is here if you'd like to check 'em out.  And the El San Juan is a beautiful hotel!
