RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
MARKET & RESTAURANT
We probably had passed by this little place four times during visits to Maui. I remember thinking it always looked good and we finally had time to try it. It was a good decision!
It's a small place and it really is a fish market. You select your victim, place your order and then take your seat and the wait staff brings your meal.
The fish is really fresh and the prices, by Maui standards, are reasonable. There were four of us on this visit and I started out with a cup of of New England seafood chowder. Creamy, rich and they weren't stingy with the seafood. For my main meal (this was lunch) I went with the fish and chips. I'm not 100% sure what kind of fish they used but it was crisply fried and tasted great.
My wife went with a blackboard special. Don't hold me to this but I'm pretty sure the special was something called either blue cod or blue nose cod. Whatever it was she had it simply grilled and she enjoyed it. Our son-in-law had the Mahi (dorado dolphin), also grilled, and he said it was quite good. Our daughter also had the fish and chips and pronounced it good.
The meals came with with fries and coleslaw or Cajun rice. Everybody at the table got the fries and slaw other than our son-in-law. He went with the rice.
The Paia Fish Market & Restaurant is on the "other" side of the island from the main hotel zones. In fact it's not far from one our favorite restaurants on the island -- Mama's Fish House. If you're traveling to Heavenly Hana you'll pass right by it. And if you're doing one of those Haleakala trips where you ride bikes down from the summit, your journey will end not far from this restaurant so you might want to include it after the ride is over.
The Paia Fish Market & Restaurant is located at 110 Hana Highway in Paia. Their phone number is (808) 579-8030. They have a basic web site here. Enjoy!
