RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
OUT WEST ARGENTINEAN
If you get your fill of freshly grilled Mediterranean fish in Malta and find yourself in the mood for a nice slab of beef, this would be a good place to dine!
They have several of branches in Malta and the one we dined at was in a shopping mall in St. Julians at Level 2, Bay Street. It's in the same complex where you'll find the local Hard Rock Cafe. There is another nearby outlet in the happenin' town of Paceville (pronounced "pawtch-ville").
The moment you enter the place you smell the steaks being grilled in the kitchen. And once you place your order, you are directed at a small but interesting salad bar featuring a lot of local Maltese items.
While the salad bar items are a little on the exotic side and local, the beef travels a long way to reach you. They get their meat from the Province of Alberta in Canada!
The meat that comes from Canada is labeled AA or, in the case of the Out West, AAA. AAA is the best quality with better marbling.
We started out our meals with some great bruschetta. Then we tried some of the interesting salad bar items and waited for the main event to arrive.
We each got steaks. Duh! I chose a T-bone and it was cooked to perfection--very rare. My wife had a strip and it was also perfect. We each had Maltese baked potato slices with the meal and they were quite good.
They put some sort of seasoning on the steaks which, in our opinion, detracted from the meat. You might want to ask your server about the spices they use and consider having your steak cooked "nude."
We can highly recommend the Out West although it's not quite in the same league with a Morton's of Chicago or Don Shula's back in the U.S.
A reservation didn't appear to be necessary on our visit but if you'd like to secure a table, just in case, you can give them a call at 21 385663/4. Long number, I know, but that's it!
