RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A well known Washington D.C. eatery just steps away from the White House and an easy trot from the J.W. Marriott if you happen to be staying there.
The minute you walk into this place you can tell it "has hair." It's been there a long time with loads of pictures on the walls of celebrities and lawmakers who have dined there before you. The wait staff is excellent but not uppity or pushy. Once seated in your booth, it feels very much like a fine "gentlemen's club."
The menu concentrates on American dishes and is heavy on meat and sandwiches for the lunch crowd. While we didn't order it, I'm told the place is famous for it's jazzed up club sandwich.
There were four of us on this occasion. I ordered a nightly special - grilled striper (sea bass). My wife went with a filet, and our other diners each had a nice New York strip. My fish was just great and everybody's steaks were cooked to perfection. And please do make it a point to try their mashed potatoes. Simply dee-lishous! And checking out their online web site menu I see they now offer lobster mashed potatoes. I tried them once at a restaurant in the Cincinnati area and they were out of this world. Next time I go back to the Occidental I'll give 'em a shot and then update this review!
The Occidental Grill is located at 1475 Pennsylvania Avenue and I'd highly recommend that you call ahead for a reservation. Their number is (202) 783-1475. Check out their web site here.
