RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
Waiheke Island is just a half hour ferry ride from Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf, which is part of the South Pacific Ocean. It's a beautiful island that reminded us of the tropical South Pacific. Places like Tahiti or the Cook Islands.
Once we got off the ferry we caught a bus to the small main town on the island. After shopping there we climbed aboard another bus to just get some other glimpses of this pretty island. We asked a fellow rider for a suggestion on where to get off and grab lunch. The woman suggested the little town of Ostend.
When the bus dropped us off, it was obvious that this was a teeny, tiny town. We asked a shop keeper in photo store for a recommendation for a place to have lunch and she rattled out the only two places in town. The first place we checked out was a meat pie store with just a table or two. Then we walked down the street and found Nourish.
This is a small cafe and bakery but it had a good crowd for lunch. We were seated at an outdoor table protected by an awning and brick wall. We didn't know what to expect here but what we got was surprisingly good!
I ordered a salad which my wife and I split. It had the usual lettuce, tomatoes and some sort of sliced green squash. It came with a house vinaigrette dressing and it was tasty.
I ordered fish and chips for my main meal and my wife requested curried chicken with rice. The minute my wife's fork hit her lips she said: "Wow, that's good!" My fish and chips was quite good, too. The fish appeared to be fresh although out in the middle of nowhere one has to doubt. Still it was very, very good and the chips (fries) were crispy and good.
If you ever find yourself in the tiny village of Ostend on Waiheke Island in New Zealand, give this place a try. In fact if you do visit Waiheke Island, it's worth seeking this place out!
I don't believe it but Nourish actually has a web site here.
