RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
It seems like Mama Ninfa's place has been here forever and I'm talking about the original location in Houston. Since opening this flagship restaurant in 1973, the late Mama Ninfa has opened a bunch of other restaurants in Texas.
You've got to sample the original location (the Navigation location) at least once to get a feel for how this homey restaurant developed. The neighborhood is a little worse for the wear but you'll survive!
If you like fajitas, you've found the Holy Grail of restaurants. Mama Ninfa created fajitas at this very shrine to Mexican cookery! Word quickly got out and the recipe spread around the world.
Tex-Mex is the star of the show here along with some more advanced seafood and meat dishes and you can't go wrong with anything you select. On our last visit my wife chose an enchilada platter consisting of three cheese beauties and a nice gravy on top. I went with a combo platter featuring some chicken fajitas, a cheese enchilada and taco. We were extra hungry on this visit and we shared a chile relleno and I hate to admit it, but we shared an order of guacamole, too. Shame on us but it was all great!
Once you've sampled the original restaurant, branch out and enjoy any of the Ninfa's outlets in Texas and you won't be disappointed.
The original Ninfa's is located at 2704 Navigation Blvd. in Houston. Their phone number is (713) 228-1175.
For complete information on all of Mama's places, they've got a nice web site here.
