RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

NICK'S FISHMARKET
HONOLULU, HAWAII

We tend to be traditionalists so when we asked around in Honolulu for a great fresh fish establishment that's been there for a long time one name kept surfacing.  Nick's Fishmarket.  So we gave it a shot.

Nick's Fishmarket is located in the Waikiki Gateway Hotel in Honolulu.  Immediately upon entering the restaurant you can definitely tell the place has, indeed, been there a long time.  It almost had a musty smell and feel about it.  The atmosphere was more like a fine gentlemen's steakhouse than a shrine to fish.

The waiter came to the table all "puffed up" in his tux and all.  While we were certainly not dressed in beach attire, I think this dude looked at us more or less like riffraff.  He looked us up and down as he took our appetizer and dinner orders.

The appetizer menu was pretty vast although not what I had anticipated.  I guess I had expected more traditional Hawaiian fare.  But there were a number of interesting choices and our party sampled shrimp in garlic butter, a crab cake, and some fried squid.  All were good but not outstanding.

For the main deal I had some ahi (tuna) with vegetables and an Asian sauce.  My wife opted for a meat dish and enjoyed a nice filet mignon, cooked very rare of course!  Our daughter had the opakapaka (a pink snapper with white, flakey meat) in a nicely done sauce.  Our son-in-law had the hit of the table.  He went with a seafood bouillabaisse and it was great.  Loaded with shrimp, crab, lobster, fish, mussels and clams.

Maybe it was the stuffy, overly hovering waiter.  I don't know.  But we all got the feeling that while the food was good, it was nothing to write home about on our one and only visit.  You may walk out of the place feeling like you've had the best seafood meal of your life.  I hope that's the case!

Again, Nick's is located at the Waikiki Gateway Hotel.  Their address is 2070 Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu.  Reservations are highly suggested.  Their phone number is (808) 955-6333.  And they have a web site here.
