RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
MANLY FISH CAFE
& SEAFOOD MARKET
Manly is a beach community about a thirty minute ferry ride away from Sydney. It's a nice place to visit, take in some sun and watch the local surfers battle the waves.
When we asked locals for a recommendation on a good place for fish and chips, this little restaurant's name came up. Everybody told us it's where the locals eat. It's just slightly off the beaten path but worth finding.
My wife and I started out with our usual order of fried calamari. Some of the biggest rings we've seen came out of the kitchen piping hot. This squid must have been on steroids he was so big! The meat was a little on the chewy side but delicious. It was served with a garlicky aioli sauce.
My wife and I each ordered the standard fish and chips for our mains and it was quite good. The fish of the day (fresh) was New Zealand cod.
The meal was excellent and the tab, without alcohol and tip, came to $52A. Sodas are some of the most expensive in the world in Australia. Refills are not included in the price and little, five ounce Diet Cokes were $2.70A each! Ouch!
To get here from the ferry terminal just follow the "Corso" until you get to the beach. Turn right along the main drag there and it's just a street or two down on the right. Turn right and you'll see the sign.
We enjoyed our meal here as did a lot of local folks. The elderly gentleman in the picture above not only devoured lobster thermidor but went through three pints of beer, too! The place also has a seafood market. Their web site is here.
