RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

LA TOJA
PANAMA CITY, PANAMA

Our friendly personal tour guide highly recommended this seafood restaurant and he was right on the money.

This is a wonderful restaurant with a lovely Panamanian decor.  We did have to meet one challenge in that we don't speak a lick of Spanish and the folks at the restaurant didn't speak a lick of English! But this is what travel is all about.  We all enjoyed "communicating" with each other as best as possible.  And by the way, as world travelers, we really should start to learn some foreign languages other than bits and pieces of German!  Just never seem to have the time.

As luck would have it, menu items were listed in Spanish and a bit of English so it wasn't like we didn't know basically what we were ordering.

My wife and I both started out with a shrimp cocktail.  For our main course I chose a mixed, fried seafood platter that featured squid (calamari), shrimp and fish.  My wife went for the fresh corvina simply grilled.  Corvina is a wonderfully white, flakey fish that is in the grouper family.  Very nicely done at this restaurant. Our daughter started her meal with a great and tasty fish soup and picked the fried seafood platter for her main selection.

We had ice cream and coffee for the finish to this very nice meal.

Prices are a steal compared to what you'd find back in the U.S.  The bill with generous tip for the three of us came to $65 U.S. and that included a bottle of good but inexpensive Chilean white wine.  While in Panama if you like beer at all you should try the two favorite local brews---Balboa and Atlas.  I think the former is the best but what do I know?!

We highly recommend La Toja to you and your family.
