RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
This was one of the first restaurants we dined at on our initial visit to our favorite island in the Caribbean.
We were "green" and had no idea where the good restaurants were and I had an intense desire for some fresh conch. For some reason our cab driver suggested Kowloon. We were all hungry and we asked him to take us there.
Upon arrival I wondered to myself why we had gone to a Chinese place to sample conch? Oh well! Turns out this was a decent find with good stir fried conch!
All the other usual suspects were on the menu plus a lot more. In addition to Chinese, Kowloon also caters to those who are in the mood for Indian curry or one of the island's favorite dishes - the rijsttafel or rice table. This is an Indonesian specialty which is highly prized in Holland. And since Aruban residents share Dutch citizenship, it's not surprising that this is a local favorite.
Rijsttafel is kind of like a buffet that is brought to your table. It might consist of a number of meat and seafood choices all centered around a big bowl of rice. In the early days, it was even more abundant on the island than it is today. One place that always comes to mind for rijsttafel was the Bali Floating Restaurant on the downtown waterfront. Unfortunately it burned down several years ago.
There's a lot of good eating in Aruba and while Chinese may not be high on your list with all of the other choices temping you, if you do find yourself in the mood for Chinese, this is your place. It's been there since at least 1986, the year of our first visit! And we love restaurants that have stood the test of time.
To the best of my knowledge, the restaurant does not have a web site but they are located in the downtown area at Emmastraat 11. Their phone number is 297/582-4950.
