RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
This is a fascinating city with some surprisingly good dining opportunities.
Since, as usual (!), our stay was going to be a short one here we pre-arranged to have a car and guide for much of the trip. I had heard about a favorite fish in Panama called corvina and asked our driver to suggest a good place for lunch. He came up with Jimmy's Grill, a very informal place specializing in grilled fish, other seafood and meat. It wasn't far from our hotel - the beautiful Caesar Park.
Entering the restaurant we couldn't help but notice two heavily armed guards, obviously military people. Our guide seemed to know them. When asked about the military dudes with the big cannons our guide explained that this restaurant is a favorite of Panama's president and therefore you'll often find armed military people there eating or just hanging out.
We invited our guide to join us since folks inside the restaurant spoke little to no English. And besides, he was a nice guy!
We started out with some fried eggplant, squid and other appetizers. Then we moved on to the heavy duty stuff like corvina and octopus, both grilled. The corvina is a grouper like fish and was very succulent. The octopus was a bit of a surprise in that it was not at all tough like you often times run into.
The menu at Jimmy's is quite large so look it over carefully before you select your victims. And I'd highly suggest that you do what we did and try a bunch of different local items and share. Prices here are excellent.
