RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

IVAR'S ACRES OF CLAMS
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, U.S.A

This has been a casual favorite in Seattle for decades.  It's a big restaurant with a family atmosphere.  It sits directly on the water with a great view of the ferries coming and going from the dock just down the way.

This restaurant specializes in fresh seafood, of course, and if you're into clams you should start your meal with an order of freshly steamed Manila clams.  If they have singing scallops, you might want to share an order with your fellow diner.  These are small little guys that are steamed in the shell and served with drawn butter.  I think this is the only place in the U.S. where we've encountered scallops served on the shell.  And the shells themselves are kind of pretty with little pink stripes.

If you're not into steamed clams then you might want to order a cup of chowder to get things rolling.  My wife loves the New England style chowder at Ivar's.

For your main course you can't go wrong with fresh salmon although when I'm on the west coast I must admit I have a weakness for Dungeness crab when it's in season.  Another favorite is halibut.  If you do choose fish for dinner, ask your sever which selection is the freshest and go with that one. Their  "Best of the Northwest" fish platter is always tempting.

This isn't the best restaurant in Seattle.  It doesn't claim to be.  But it's a great downtown tradition, serves up good, reliable seafood and the view alone is worth the "price of admission."  I highly recommend it to you and if you've got kids, no problem.

Ivar's is located at the water's edge on Pier 54 in downtown Seattle.  They have a corporate website here.
