In English the restaurant's name translates into "King of Fish" and it measures up to its reputation!  If you're staying in the Paceville/St. Julian's area as we were, it's about a 20 minute taxi ride but well worth the effort.

Fresh Catch - Lobster, Porgy on the Left
Top Right Down - Amberjack, Scorpionfish & Bream
Plus some King Prawns Scattered About

The restaurant offers a few tables inside but it's mainly a lovely tropical terrace like setting.  And as you can see from the picture above, you are greeted at the door with the fish and shellfish that have been caught that day.

I started my meal with fish soup and it was great.  Just a few flecks of fish in it but the broth was sensationally rich in flavor.  My wife started with a prosciutto and fruit combination.  It, too, was wonderful.  Then came a surprise.  Another starter and this one was on the house.  It was tuna carpaccio.  Raw marinated tuna with huge capers about the size of large, elongated olives.  It was good but we both agreed that the fish was a little strong.

Extremely Pleasant Setting

We asked our server to suggest his favorite fish and preparation and we settled on two of his suggestions--steamed scorpionfish and grilled amberjack.  Our server was kind enough to give us each a portion of both fish so that we wouldn't have to "share" off of each other's plates.  The fish was outstanding and it came with roasted Maltese potatoes and fresh broccoli.  We each ended the meal with a nice dessert.  And get this.  With a bottle of wine, the whole tab came to about $50 U.S.!

Chef/Owner Michael Cauchi With Me

The man pictured above owns the restaurant and goes to each table to thank patrons and to answer any questions they might have about the seafood, preparation, etc.  And by the way, even though this restaurant is the King of Fish, vegetarians haven't been left out and there are also selections for carnivores.

The night we were there we were the first customers but the place filled up pretty quickly.  So securing a reservation would be wise.  And to make sure to get the best selection of the freshest catch, get there early!  Il Re Del Pesce is technically located in Triq id-Dahla ta' San Tumas, Marsascala.  But don't be frightened.  Any taxi driver will likely be familiar with the place.  Their phone number is 634178 or 636353.

We highly recommend this restaurant for wonderfully fresh fish, friendly service and good value.
