RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

HARRY RAMSDEN'S
BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND

We only had a very brief visit to Belfast and secured the services of a local hack driver as a tour guide.  We asked the driver about a good restaurant for traditional English fish and chips and he highly recommended a place called Harry Ramsden's.  So off we went.

At the time we didn't realize that this was actually part of a restaurant chain but nonetheless we were not disappointed with our meals.

They've been around since 1928 so apparently they know what they're doing!  The restaurant was big, airy and colorful not unlike a Bob Evans restaurant in the U.S. but bigger.

They offer a big menu of various items but you should try what made 'em famous, the fish and chips.  They offer a tempting variety of fish including the very traditional plaice (a flat, flounder type fish with wonderfully mild, white, flaky flesh), hake, haddock and cod.  My wife went with the plaice and it was right on the money!  I decided to be a bit different and went for the cod "special" which meant an oversized portion.  It was nothing short of brilliant, as they might say in the U.K.  We both had our meals with chips and orders of traditional British "mushy" peas.  These are simply green peas that have been boiled and mashed up.  I know it sounds bad but they taste great!

For dessert they offer some traditional U.K. items like puddings along with ice cream, cheesecake, etc.  I'm not a dessert person but my wife enjoyed a toffee pudding for the close of her meal.

We've been to many, many traditional fish and chips places and pubs that serve great fish and chips throughout the U.K. and Harry Ramsden's rates highly.

You'll find their web site here.
