RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK HARBOURSIDE
RESTAURANT When we checked into the beautiful Auckland Hilton Hotel I struck up a conversation with our concierge and asked for his recommendation on the best seafood restaurant in Auckland. Without missing a beat he asked me to step out the back door and he pointed to the old Ferry Terminal Building just a short walk away. He highly recommended the Harbourside on the second story of the building and I asked him to book a reservation for us.
Our server was okay but not exactly lightening fast. And while she wasn't nasty or anything she didn't typify that good natured Kiwi attitude that we had seen just about everywhere in the Land of the Long White Cloud (as New Zealand is called). I started out with a bowl of seafood chowder. It had fish, mussels, and clams and it was okay. It was not nearly hot enough, temperature wise, however. My wife went with a cup of crayfish chowder and it was okay. On a scale of 1 to 10, we each rated our soups about a 5.
For my main meal that night I ordered their Harbourside Seafood Platter. It came with raw salmon, smoked salmon, sashimi, oysters, prawns, green lipped mussels, pipis (a local clam), chili style calamari, cherrystone clams, a crab cake, some king prawns, and scallops with roe. Most of it was pretty average although the prawns were very, very good. The mussels were nearly cold in temp. The crab cake was awful and the scallops were fishy and unappealing.
My wife had salmon with ravioli in a rich, creamy lobster sauce. She absolutely loved her meal. Maybe we just hit this place on an "off" night but somehow I can't imagine that this restaurant is the best seafood place around. They have a web site here. ADDITIONAL NEW ZEALAND RESTAURANT REVIEWS
