RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
This place serves the best stuffed flounder on the planet. I was working in Dallas when I first heard about this restaurant. Our sports director at my radio station was Wes Wise, the former mayor of Dallas, and when he heard that we were going to visit Galveston one weekend he insisted that we try Gaido's. In fact he said that he had taken his family down there and spent the night just so he could partake of that wonderful stuffed flounder.
They take a small, whole flounder and de-bone it. It is then stuffed with an incredibly rich, lump crab meat stuffing using Gulf coast blue crabs and it is broiled to perfection. Incredible! That's what draws most people I know to the restaurant. Note - when crabs are not available, they switch to plan-b and alter the stuffing adding other delicious seafood. But you want to be there when they're serving it with lump blue crab meat.
During our many enjoyable meals there members of our dinner parties have tried various fried fish, shrimp, and seafood platters. One favorite and very rich offering is simply lump crab meat sautéed in butter. Plain but delicious.
Our first experience came here in 1975 and in numerous re-visits, we've never had a bad meal here. We are traditionalists and it just doesn't get much better than this for good, simple, down home seafood.
They're located right across the street from the Gulf at 39-hundred Seawall Blvd. Their phone number is (409) 762-9625. I've never been there when a reservation would be necessary. In fact I don't even know whether they take reservations. But go early on a Friday or Saturday night. They have a web site here.
Note: As far as we can tell, the hurricanes of 2005 did not do appreciable damage to this wonderful institution.
