RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

FLOATA SEAFOOD RESTAURANT
VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA

Funny - it doesn't sound like a Chinese restaurant, does it?  But it is and it's huge.  In fact, it's Canada's largest Chinese restaurant and it seats about 1,000 hungry diners!

You'll find Floata in Vancouver's small Chinatown.  We chose it because we heard their dim sum was among the best anywhere in the world.

Dim sum is like a buffet on wheels.  Instead of getting up and going to through the buffet line, you simply remain at your table and servers approach you with various items.  Each cart might contain one, two or three items.  Each items come in a small portion.  For instance, you might be tempted to try a plate with two or three small spring rolls.  Other options include everything from chicken feet (a beloved favorite in China) to shrimp dumplings.  This restaurant, for some reason, also had a buffet section that you could approach on foot if the carts weren't fast enough to suit your needs.

Most Chinese Americans sip green tea and remain at their table for a couple of hours if not longer enjoying this moveable feast.  They also take time out to read the newspaper while the dim sum carts circulate.

We knew Floata was going to be good the moment we walked into the place because the clientele was Asian.  In fact, we were the only non-Asians in the place!  And we were not disappointed with our experience!

The way they figure out your bill is by counting the "spent" plates on your table.  While nobody in the place speaks much English, if there is a question about the bill, an English speaking person will appear promptly!  Money speaks loudly in all languages.

Floata is operated by a firm with headquarters in Hong Kong but there is one slight difference between the Floata experience and one you would likely have in Hong Kong.  People in Vancouver aren't nasty and rude!

Try the chicken feet!  And at least try the chopstix.  They're not that hard to master although sometimes it's hard grasping a mushroom.  Just go ahead and stab the darned thing.  Anything that works!

Floata is located at 400-180 Keefer Street in Vancouver.  Their phone number is (604) 602-0368.  And they have a web site here.
