RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

FISKEKROEN
BERGEN, NORWAY

This is a delightful little seafood restaurant right, smack, dab on the water's edge in the harbor area of this pretty little Scandinavian town.

Earlier in the day we had wandered around the area and checked out all the fresh seafood being offered by the local venders at market stalls.  They had everything from live crabs to shrimp, lobster and even live cod swimming around.  I had never seen live cod at a market before.  Sadly, the cod seemed to be friendly and followed my hand around the tank.  Too bad they taste so good!

Live (!) cod just down the street from the restaurant awaiting buyers.

Admittedly we splurged on this dinner.  My wife was with me along with our daughter and her husband.  Live Norwegian lobster was on the menu and we elected to order two of them steamed as a starter and each couple split one.  They looked similar to North American lobster with claws and all but the taste was slightly different.  I'd say the meat was a little more like the Caribbean spiney lobster in taste but very sweet.

One of two Norwegian lobsters we split as starters.  Dee-licious!

For our main course, we all selected a special that included three different sautéed fish.  Glorious pieces of fresh Halibut, Salmon and Monkfish turned up on the plate and they were all sensational.

We finished off the meal with some rich desserts and a couple of cups of nice, hot coffee.  Even in the summer it gets chilly in this part of the world and the coffee was a nice touch before we walked the short distance back to our hotel.

Fiskekroen is a perfect 10 in our opinion.  It's a small place and gets jam packed quickly so I'd phone them for a reservation.  That local phone number in Bergen is 55-55-96-90.
