RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

FISKEKAELDEREN
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

We were eager to sample the delights of this restaurant.  Since it was billed by many as the best seafood restaurant in Copenhagen, we made it our first night's choice.

Fearing that this place would be wildly popular, we made a reservation upon arrival at our hotel for a 7:30 dinner.  When we arrived there were only two other tables occupied at this medium sized restaurant.

The description of this restaurant mentioned that it had tanks full of live lobster and a dazzling display of the catch of the day on ice.  When we were there, there were no tanks and no fish on display.

We all ordered fresh fish of varying types and it was good.  Good but not great.  And the service -- forget it!  We had a waitress who's head was somewhere else, certainly not on the tables she should have been watching over.  She just stood at the door of the place staring out into the street daydreaming about something.

We ordered a bottle of white wine with dinner and rather than leaving it on the table she placed it "around the corner."  If we wanted our glasses refilled, we had two choices.  Either quietly try to summon her verbally or actually get up and go and get her.  We chose the latter so as not to be rude to the two other dining parties.

Based on our one and only visit to this highly acclaimed restaurant, we'd suggest another place.  Even if the waitress had been a perfect 10, the fish was nothing out of the ordinary.  And while we don't place much importance on atmosphere, there was nothing of a seafaring nature here.  You could have just as easily been at a Bavarian restaurant in Germany.

Fiskekaelderen is located at Ved Stranden 18.  And if you're staying at the stuffy, hoity-toity Hotel d'Angleterre, it's a short walk from your room.
