RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
FISHERS IN THE
This restaurant came highly recommended no matter who we talked with about it. And it was a most enjoyable dining experience. This is actually the sister restaurant of the original Fishers which is located in the port city of Leith, just a short cab ride from downtown Edinburgh.
My wife and I carefully scrutinized the menu and made our decisions. For me, it was a no-brainer. The fresh mussels screamed out at me! And folks, these were the most succulent, tender, flavorful, delicious beauties I've ever had. Sorry to our friends in Belgium where mussels are practically a religion, but these outdid yours! Sorry to our friends in Quebec City where mussels are also all the rage. These topped yours, too. So if you even vaguely like mussels, you should definitely try 'em here if they are on the menu.
My wife passed on the starters and lunged for her main meal which were Isle Barra Scallops. I chose a whole Dover sole for my main and it was wonderful. The scallops were delicious, too. My wife made up for passing on the appetizer by ordering a very rich and luxurious dessert - apricot raspberry brulee.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable evening. The Edinburgh International Festival was on during this particular visit so we were smart enough to phone in a reservation about a week before we flew to the U.K. from the U.S. When the hotel staff asked where we were going for dinner that night, they were amazed that we had been able to swing a reservation at Fishers!
The restaurant is located at 58 Thistle Street in Edinburgh. Their number for reservations (and I'd suggest you make one) is: 0131 225 5109. They now have a web site here.
