RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

ERIK'S SEAFOOD GROTTO
MAUI, HAWAII

This is our favorite place for fresh seafood in the Kaanapali area.  It's located in a condo village (Kahana Villas)I like it because they serve outstanding seafood in a nice setting but it's not at all stuffy.

If you're a clam lover Erik's will please you with an appetizer order of wonderfully fresh steamed clams.  Moving on to the main menu there is a vast array of fresh fish ranging from the ever present mahi to a'u, ono, ahi, ulua, uku, and onaga.  Suggested preparation methods are listed on the menu but you can always have it cooked up "your way."

The menu is certainly not restricted to fresh fish.  They serve plenty of shellfish including somewhat hard to find Hawaiian saltwater prawns.  My wife sampled an excellent bouillabaisse on one visit.  And you can select from rack of lamb and several cuts of steaks.

We're not dessert people but Erik's does serve up some tempting sweets.

To sum it up, Erik's is an outstanding place for absolutely fresh fish and seafood.  It has a nice atmosphere but the service is friendly rather than stuffy.  They have a children's menu and kids are welcome.

If you're staying in a Kaanapali resort just head up the road toward Kapalua and look for 4242 L. Honoapilani Highway.  And remember, the restaurant is tucked away at the Kahana Villas.

Reservations are accepted and might be a good idea although we've never had any serious problems.  Their phone number is (808) 669-4806.  Enjoy!!!  (Update:  They now have a web site here.)
