RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
DOYLES AT THE
Doyles is a name synonymous with fresh fish in this sparkling city. It's been that way for decades. However we were reluctant to sample this particular branch because of some very bad reviews in several publications. However one night we were tired after walking for miles and miles and since the place was very close to our hotel, the Park Hyatt, we decided to pop in.
This restaurant is actually located in The Rocks section of Sydney in a building that also serves as a terminal for giant cruise ships that visit here. But this area is also referred to as Circular Quay thus the name "Doyles at the Quay."
From the minute we entered this place I detected an incredibly good smell. You could smell freshly cooked fresh fish! I love that! And another thing caught my attention. All the waiters appeared to be pretty old as if they had worked at this restaurant for a long time. I like that, too, although sometimes older waiters can be crabby. But that was not the case here.
To begin this dinner my wife and I chose a cold appetizer plate. It came with 2 big prawns (shrimp), 2 Sydney rock oysters, some salad and a huge amount of gently smoked salmon. We both really enjoyed it.
For our mains my wife selected fish and chips and I chose fried, fresh barramundi (a favorite local, Australian fish). The fish and chips were quite good but I think my fish stole the show. Mine came with two huge filets of perfectly fried fish. I ordered a side of mashed potatoes and they were great, too.
If this place did, at one point, slip into an abyss it's back now based on our outstanding meal here. We highly recommend Doyles to you. There are other Doyles in the Sydney area to sample, too, including Doyles on the Beach at Watson's Bay, Doyles Fisherman's Wharf and a Doyles at the Sydney Fish Market. The travel guides say the latter two are far better than the outlet we tried. But again, we loved Doyles at the Quay!
Doyles web site is here.
