RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

DORA'S
PROVO, TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS

Dora's place is one of the best places on the island to go for good, locally prepared favorites including my personal favorite - conch.  It's the critter that comes out of the large shell with the pretty polished pink lips that you see at tourist shops.

Cracked conch is my favorite.  A large animal is beaten with a mallet to tenderize the meat and it is breaded and deep fried to a golden perfection.  It resembles wiener schnitzel in appearance like you'd see in Germany or Austria.  It has a sweet "clammy" taste and admittedly it is a little on the tough side even with the pounding.  But it's delicious served up with some tartar sauce.

Dora's also also fries up some great fresh fish and offers wonderful seafood platters.  Be sure to ask your friendly server about fish fry night.  When we were there they had a seafood buffet one or two nights a week and they were even willing to send a car to pick you up from your hotel.

While this place has a comfy, down home feel to it---it's nothing fancy---you'll get the real deal here.  True, wonderful Caribbean style food.

Dora's place is located on Leeward Highway and their phone number is 946-4558.  They are open quite late and they even have a couple of slot machines if you feel lucky.   They don't have an actual web site but there is more information here.  In fact, I just checked the site only to find out that they are open for breakfast and lunch.  Wish I had known that when we were there.  Oh well..
