RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
We generally try to avoid hotel restaurants and get out and enjoy the real deal when visiting a foreign country. But on our first stay at the Wyndham on Palm Beach in Aruba we were really tired and decided to give the Cafe Baci a try on the main floor of the hotel. It was a great decision.
The restaurant is elegant but the dress code is very casual. And while elegant, Cafe Baci is anything but stuffy.
You'll find breadsticks on the table but we opted to immediately order some garlic bread and it was good. Our server was outstanding and she started me off with an order of fried calamari and it was great! My wife started the evening out with a cup of minestrone and she said it was wonderful.
For my main meal, like a typical American, I went with the pasta special of the evening. It was made with tiny spaghetti noodles (probably angel hair) in a light olive oil and tomato sauce with plenty of garlic and mixed seafood. Most Italians would start with a small order of pasta and then move onto a fish or meat dish. My wife also acted like an American and went with a pasta course -- lasagna and she said it was wonderful.
The meal was surprisingly filling and I had no room for dessert. I rarely eat dessert anyway. So I just slurped on a hot cup of coffee and nursed a cognac while my wife invaded a delicious dessert.
This was our first sampling of this great restaurant. On our many visits to this great island we've enjoyed it many times. In fact we make it a point to eat here. On one visit we got to talking with a couple at a nearby table and they mentioned that Cafe Baci is their favorite Italian restaurant on the island. For moderately priced food I would agree although there are some good ones in the village of Noord. And for absolutely the top of the line Italian, Valentino's would get my vote. But do enjoy Cafe Baci and you won't be disappointed.
Cafe Baci is on the main floor of the Wyndham Hotel, the first hotel on Palm Beach. The Wyndham web site with information on Cafe Baci is located here.
Note: This hotel has changed ownership. We hope it continues to be a fine place to sleep and dine! This restaurant is still operational.
