RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

BRYGGELOFTET AND STUEN
BERGEN, NORWAY

Bryggeloftet and Stuen is a delightful place on the old town side of the fjord in Bergen serving traditional Norwegian goodies.

Head For These Buildings and You'll Find the Restaurant!

Since this place serves truly local food you're always going to find three things highlighting the main course portion of the menu--reindeer, moose and whale.  While I've had reindeer and moose (quite tasty), I just couldn't bring myself to try the whale.  Same thing when I'm in the Cayman Islands and sea turtle steak is offered on the menu.  I know and appreciate that both cultures have their traditions but it's just not my cup of tea.

Our waitress at this restaurant was extremely nice and was eager to answer any questions we had about the surprisingly lengthy menu.  One thing she encouraged us to try was the Bergen fish soup and it was outstanding.

There were four of us dining at the restaurant for a late lunch that day and most of us ordered either salmon or halibut.  Norway is world famous for salmon and our fish was perfect.  The halibut was sensational, too.  My wife was getting a little tired of fish on this trip so she dared to be different and tried a hamburger.  Folks, when you're traveling in a foreign country as an American and order a hamburger, it's probably not gonna be what you expected unless you're dining at an international branch of the golden arches!  Cindy's "Bergenburger" was more or less some sort of meatloaf on a bun with a tomato based sauce.  Not bad at all but certainly not a good old fashioned American burger!

This is a great restaurant with reasonable prices.  And before and after your meal, meander around this old, old, heavily wooden town and enjoy the sights!  Bergen is said to be the most popular tourist destination in Scandinavia and it's a neat little place.  But do bring a jacket and an umbrella because it can be nippy and quite rainy even during the heart of summer.

Good news!  Since our visit they've put up a little web site.  Check 'em out right here.
