RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
Bondi Beach (pronounced: Bahn-dye) is probably the most famous beach in Sydney. There are nearly always surfers riding the waves and lots of people eating their lunch on park benches or down on the beach itself.
In checking the area out we passed by a really good looking seafood market and take-a-way counter called Bondi Surf Seafoods and decided to check it out.
They had a huge array of different prawns, fish, lobsters and crabs to name a few of the selections. In the back of the shop is where you order your take-a-way meals.
My wife and I each ordered fish and chips and I asked that we each be given two filets instead of one. The fish in the standard order was tarahiki, a New Zealand local favorite.
We took our white paper packages loaded with fish and chips across the street to a nice park bench and chowed down. By the way, watch out for the seagulls here with the bright red feet and beaks. They are some of the most aggressive we've seen anywhere in the world and will make an all out effort to steal a French fry right off your lap!
The fish was crisp and still too hot to eat by the time we got to the bench. But when it did cool down enough to eat it was just great. The chips were nice, too. The tarter sauce from this place was a dollar extra for about a 2 to 3 ounce portion but it was tasty. "Tomato Sauce," their word for catsup, was also extra although I can't remember how much.
You don't have to order the standard fish and chips here. You can select any piece of fish from the fresh fish counter and have it breaded and fried for your enjoyment. And if you have money to burn you can order a kilo of freshly cooked king prawns to go along with your fish and chips.
This was a most enjoyable experience. Check out their web site and look at the vast variety of fresh seafood they stock! Web site is here.
