RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A LA CARTE
This delightful restaurant is located in the Melia Tamarindos Hotel and it's a good one. Normally we try to avoid hotel restaurants in favor of stand-alone, traditional, local restaurants. We avoid hotel restaurants unless they are very, very good or we are very, very tired. In this case, we were very, very tired and the restaurant was very, very good!
It had definitely been a long day. We crossed the Atlantic from Atlanta to Madrid and then had 8 hours to kill in Madrid before catching our final 2 and a half hour flight to Grand Canaria Island. Not having the energy to walk or take a cab to a restaurant, we took a chance on this one and it paid off.
We were seated next to a couple from Britain and they immediately struck up a conversation commenting that the food was really quite good. They highly recommended the lamb. In fact they told us that they liked this place so much that they had dined here several times during their stay.
My wife started out with a local seafood soup teaming with fish and bits of shellfish. It was quite good. I kicked off my meal with a salad. For our main courses we both ordered fish in a local sauce. I ordered it with sea bass and my wife chose cod. Each preparation was the same. Both fish dishes came in a rich, creamy sauce along with boiled potatoes, green peas and a handful of small and fishy tasting clams. I don't know what it is with clams from Spain but I've never had one, single, great and "normal" tasting clam during any of our visits to Spain! Other than the clams both fish presentations were very good.
My wife finished off her meal with a sweet dessert although we can't remember what she selected. I've got to start taking notes! I had a cup of hot coffee to end my meal.
This is a good place to dine. I don't know what time it opens (it's attached to a nice buffet restaurant) but keep in mind that most local Spaniards won't even think about going out for dinner earlier than 9 or 10 o'clock.
Again - this restaurant is located in the Melia Tamarindos Hotel on San Agustin beach in Maspalonas.
