RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
A PERSONAL REVIEW OF RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD

CAIS DA RIBEIRA
CAIS DO SODRE
LISBON, PORTUGAL

This is a fine little seafood restaurant right on the water's edge not far from the main hotels in downtown Lisbon.

Upon arrival you hesitate before going into the restaurant due to the fine water view.  You can almost "taste" the fresh sea air, too.

The first thing you see when you enter this restaurant is an entire pig's leg on a carving stand near the front door.  The leg even has the pig's hoof on it.  Shortly after taking your seat, your server will arrive at your table with some razor thin slices of this air cured pork.  You'll pay a nominal charge for it per table.  This starter tends to always come automatically at restaurants in Lisbon and it's pretty good.  Not as hoity-toity as prosciutto but an interesting and salty treat.

The servers at this restaurant were prompt, friendly and efficient and spoke enough English to help us make a good selection.

We all picked grilled fish (grilled whole) and everybody enjoyed their meal. I can't remember exactly what kind of fish we each chose but they were all nicely cooked.  They had white, flaky flesh.

We washed it all down with some reasonably priced and tasty local wine and everybody agreed that it was a great dining experience.

If you're ever in Lisbon, I hope you'll give it a try!
